Passes - Campolongo, Gardena, Sella, Fedaia, Falzarego, Giau
This is the hotel that we're staying in viewed from a turn-out after the first switch-back on our way back up to the Campolongo pass (this is the way we came in last night.)
After the Campolongo pass we head up toward the Gardena pass... this is the view back down from 3/4 of the way up the pass... check out the road we just rode... what fun!!!
Another view, with a bit more of the valley in the picture.
And the view ahead... you can almost see the pass up ahead, and the incredible Dolomite peaks!
On the other side of the Gardena we ran into a bit of construction, so it was time to snap off a quick picture!
Here we are at our last pass before lunch, the Fedaia.
And another view of the Fedaia with a bit more of the valley shown in the background.
After the Fedaia pass we headed to our lunch rendezvous with the other tour members who signed up. It's in the Sottoguda gorge, which is accessible by a one-way road. David got Paige and Brian to stop for this picture just before we headed under the overhang you see here. We're here about a half an hour early, but we found the location (a picnic table next to a chapel.) David decided to hang out and take some more pictures while Paige and Brian rode the loop around another time, and stopped for a bathroom and ice cream cones (those bums!)
The bridge over the gorge. We rode over this bridge on our way to the gorge.
The two fuzzy bumps near the right hand side of the bridge are Brian and Paige, who stopped to take some pictures and wave to David.
The van (Myrtle) arrives in the gorge.
Leslie and Richard (I think) show up.
Finally Paige and Brian return for the picnic.
And a view of the whole group as we munch!
When we finished lunch we decided to ride two more passes with a stop in between in Cortina to see the sights. We ended up riding with Richard and Leslie (or did they end up riding with us? :-) and here's Richard with the bikes at the top of the Falzarego pass.
A view of Cortina as we approach from above. Cortina is where Brian dropped his motorcycle during his last motorcycle trip in Europe. This time he managed to make it home without dropping the bike. When we arrived in Cortina, Richard led us down a pedestrian corridor by accident. We had lots of Italians waving (index) fingers at us :-) We then found a gas station right near the pedestrian zone to fill up at. When we asked the attendant where to park she gave us directions, but then we asked if we could park there in one of the empty parking spots at the gas station, and she said yes. That wasn't too surprising given that we'd just dropped about $75 filling up all 5 motorcycles with gasoline.
On the way to Passo di Giau we paused to take a few pictures of more pretty scenery and towns...
Despite the clouds that look so threatening in this picture we didn't get rained on at all during this day!
Riding down Giau was a lot of fun for all of us... usually riding down a pass is less fun than riding up, but David felt really comfortable riding down the far side of Giau, it was a great ride. It was also getting later in the day, which was usually a good time to be out riding as the traffic on the roads reduced greatly and we had them almost to ourselves.
